Your Body Isn't Broken — It's Still Bracing

Jul 23, 2026

Clear scans are supposed to mean you can relax. For a lot of women, they don't, not right away, and sometimes not for a long time.

If your body still feels like it's on guard even though the medical news is good, you're not being ungrateful, and nothing is wrong with you. Your body is doing exactly what a body that survived something dangerous is supposed to do: stay ready, just in case.

Trust Doesn't Return on the Same Timeline as Scans

There's an assumption that once treatment ends and results come back clear, trust in your body should simply resume. In practice, trust and medical status often move on completely different timelines.

Your body didn't just get sick, for many women, it felt like it broke a promise. It's reasonable that rebuilding trust with something that felt like it betrayed you takes more than good news on a chart. Trust is rebuilt through repeated experience, not through a single piece of information, however good that information is.

Why This Isn't "Just Anxiety"

It's tempting for you or for people around you, to file this under generic anxiety and try to think your way past it. But hypervigilance after cancer isn't irrational. It's a nervous system that adapted, accurately, to a real threat. That adaptation doesn't switch off just because the threat has technically passed.

This is exactly why talk-based approaches alone often aren't enough. A lot of what your body is holding isn't stored as a thought you can reason with, it's stored physically, in the nervous system itself.

Working With the Body, Not Just the Mind

This is where body-based work becomes so useful. In my practice, I use HypnoBreathwork®, breathwork, hypnosis, and visualization together, specifically because it works at the level where this bracing actually lives, rather than only at the level of conscious thought. It's an active process, not a passive relaxation technique: real, engaged work with your body and your subconscious mind, aimed at slowly teaching your nervous system that it's safe to stand down.

That process isn't instant, and it isn't linear. But it is possible to get to a place where your body feels less like a threat you're managing and more like an ally again.

A Small Place to Start

You don't need a full session to begin. This week, try pausing on one small physical sensation each day, the warmth of your coffee, water on your hands, sun on your skin, for just ten seconds, without judging it or trying to force a feeling. You're not trying to feel good. You're practicing noticing, which is the first quiet step back toward trust.

If you're ready for more structured support in rebuilding that trust, I'd love to help.

I have a pre-recorded HypnoBreathwork® session on "Releasing Anxiety" in my products store. Find it in the MENU.
