My Body, My Timeline: The Boundary Cancer Taught Me to Set

Sep 15, 2026

Somewhere around month three after treatment ended, someone asked me, not unkindly, just casually "so are you basically back to normal now?"

I remember exactly how my jaw tightened. Because the honest answer was no, not even close, and I was tired of pretending otherwise to make small talk easier for someone else.

Everyone Has a Timeline for You. Ignore All of Them.

People will have opinions about how long your recovery should take. Family who wants their old version of you back. Coworkers who need you fully "on" again. Friends who mean well but measure your progress by how you seem from the outside, which is never the whole picture. Even doctors, who are tracking your physical recovery, aren't always tracking the rest of it.

None of those timelines are yours to follow. Your body went through something specific to it, and it gets to heal on its own schedule, not the schedule that's most convenient for the people around you.

The Boundary I Had to Learn to Say Out Loud

"I'm not there yet, and I don't know exactly when I will be." That sentence took me a long time to say without immediately apologizing after it. I used to soften it, add a hopeful spin, reassure whoever I was talking to that I was basically fine, really, don't worry. I don't do that anymore. If I'm not there yet, I say so, flatly, and I let the silence sit instead of rushing to make someone else feel better about it.

That's the boundary: my timeline doesn't need to be justified, sped up, or explained away to satisfy someone else's comfort level with how long healing is taking.

What This Actually Protects

This boundary isn't about shutting people out. It's about protecting the one thing that actually determines whether you heal well: whether you're honest with yourself about where you are, instead of performing further along than you actually are because it's easier for everyone else.

Every time I forced my timeline to match someone else's expectations, I ended up right back at square one, just more depleted. Every time I held the boundary, my body, my pace, no explanation required, I actually moved forward.

Set the Boundary. Don't Apologize for It.

If you're feeling pressure to be "further along" than you are, you're allowed to say: this is where I am, and I'm not rushing it for anyone's comfort, including my own impatience with myself. That's not weakness. That's the exact thing that makes real healing possible instead of performed healing that collapses the second no one's watching.
